But once I learned a few tips and tricks through research and field experience, the process got enjoyable.
So if you’re confused about choosing an area rug among thousands of capturing options, then this blog is for you!
Tips and Tricks to Choose the Perfect Area Rug
1- Measure your space
The size of your space generally determines the size of your area rug. Typically, you want a large area rug in a large room, like an 8×10 or 9×12.
However, if your living room is small, a rug placed under your coffee table may work better. Just make sure it extends off the table. Usually, 5×7 is a good size for this.
2. The material of the area rug
The best material for an area rug will be defined by where it is located, your lifestyle, and how much traffic the area will get.
Wool and Jute rugs are good choices for high-traffic areas—they’re a bit tougher and less bulky in feel but can resist wear and tear. If you’re living with a cat or dog, they love to scratch over rugs or chew the fringes, which is something to be aware of! Synthetic materials such as polypropylene and nylon are also rigid, but these rugs are most of the time machine-made and not comparable to handmade area rugs in terms of value and sustainability.
Low-traffic areas such as bedrooms can buy slightly less durable but more luxurious materials, such as silk rugs and cotton rugs.
3- The Color of your area rug
It probably goes without saying that a white or cream rug in a high-traffic area like the entrance hall is a recipe for disaster. So always consider the foot traffic and stain possibility (dirty shoes or food spills). As a pattern, the room’s primary color and repeating or contrasting it is an excellent way to ensure that the area rug will create the delightful harmony that you expect.
Especially if you have the right size, it can dramatically affect how a room feels. If you have a room or floor that is quite dark, bringing in a light-colored large area rug will brighten up the space. Similarly, bringing in a large dark rug will darken the room.
4- Consider your furniture
You also need to consider how your furniture will look next to the candidate area rug. Placing a sofa set on a large rug (of course with a rug pad!) in the living room is a smart way to pull the space together.
You can choose to fit all your furniture on the rug if it fills up most of your space, or buy one size down and place the front legs of your furniture on the rug.
Round or oval area rugs are excellent choices for small spaces, drawing the eye to center stage, where you can enjoy it from almost anywhere (including comfortable sofas and chairs). They are perfect for placing under coffee and end tables.
What is the space being used for?
The room plays a key role in choosing the right area rug. If it’s a high-traffic area, you don’t want to buy a plush silk rug that’s so delicate and hard to clean.
Also, if you’re living with kids or pets at home, you’d better ask for a professional rug cleaning at least every six months. Sophia’s Rugs also serves you with the highest quality Rug Cleaning in Louisville, KY, and surrounding counties. For more information, please click here.
How to a dining room rug?
A rug for the dining room should be large enough to fit the table and chairs in a dining room. Ideally, there should be a time for the chairs to still be on the rug when they are taken out.
A round rug is the best if you have a round dining table. If you have a long table, a rectangular rug will look best.
How to choose bedroom rugs?
You might want to place your area rug under your bed in a bedroom. In this case, 8×10 works best for a queen, and 9×12 works best for a king-size bed.
The general rule is placing 2/3 of the rug under the bed, spreading 18-24″ on either side if nothing is on the bottom of the bed.
If you eventually want to have a bench or lounge chair, place 1/3 of the rug under the bed. This allows the rug to be lifted off the bench on foot.
You can also choose to place a rug next to the bed instead. You can place either side of the bedsheet in the middle of the room or one side when sitting against a wall.
How to choose a good office rug?
The desk and chair must fit on the rug in an office, with lots of rugs extending on all sides. For our office, we ordered a 5×7 to complete this look.
Area rug for the corners of your house
Maybe you have a corner in the nursery or study to which you want to add some warmth. A small round or oval rug is an excellent idea for this! You can anchor it with a comfy chair and a small side table.
Neutral or Abstract Pattern?
Which look are you going for? Is your space more neutral? You might want to bring in some bold colors and patterns with your rug.
Do you already have a lot of colors or patterns in your space? So you might want to keep it neutral with a jute rug. A tone-on-tone pattern can also work.
You can add depth and layer your rugs with a large neutral jute rug on the bottom and a patterned and eye-catching oriental rug on top.
But don’t forget to consider what colors you already have in your space and look for rugs that complement those colors.
Or if you’re starting from scratch or redecorating in a new home, choose a rug first and pull colors from the pattern and add throw pillows and blankets, etc., that will complement the space.

In the end, choosing the right area rug for your space doesn’t have to be a daunting task.
